Inauguration - The First Green President

Published by chuckloder at 1:56 pm under permaculture Edit This

The media makes such a big deal about race when for me it has a lot less to do with race than it does with peace and environmentalism.  The big difference to me is the man’s policies on green energy and renewable industries.  They keep calling him “the first black president”, but to me he’s also a white guy and more importantly he’s a global citizen.  Here’s hoping he really is a green guy.

The simple facts are so glaringly obvious when it comes to global warming and other environmental problems that immediate action is required.  Even more than that is the realization that the old free-market model of a capitalist economy, which assumes an infinite resource base and an ever-expanding economy is fundamentally flawed, and that a sustainable approach is essential.  That’s why we’ve got such a mess to begin with.  The entire economy is built on false assumptions about the basic nature of reality.  Efficiency and sustainability have to be the fundamental requirement in all systems.  We’ve basically been building the opposite of that.

Barack Obama’s commitment to invest in a green economy is what means most.  Of course we don’t know what will happen, but things are looking so much brighter for the future and it feels like anything is possible.

With the amount of money that we spend on war we can reforest the worlds deserts and mitigate and minimize the effects of climate change.  How long will it be until we have the armies of the world planting trees?  The sooner the better.  It’s essential to survival and a good idea anyway.  Enough of these wars and wastelands.
