Spring Comes Early in Cali
The buds on the almond tree are just swelling up enough to know that at any moment one of them will open and officially (for me) spring will be underway. The almonds are first, then cherries and then the rest of the stone fruits (plums, peaches, apricots). I just finished pruning the apricot tree in my yard today too and it’s about time. Of course, many of the acacia trees around here are in full bloom already. You can see them with their bright yellow flowers covering them entirely along freeways and roadsides all over the Bay Area. I love those trees, the smell is heavenly and the fact that they are such powerful soil builders with their ability to fix nitrogen out of the air always comforts me deep in my soul. I’ve spent more than a few conversations defending them and their value against people who have been told that they are somehow bad and wrong. It always amazes me the things that seemingly intelligent people will believe - like that certain plants are to be held responsible for the general degradation of certain environments. People so often believe in theories that are exactly the opposite of reality. This evening as I was putting away tools and cleaning up I went upstairs to check the sunset and thought maybe it isn’t too early to see the new moon. Just then I saw her, the thinnest silver sliver in the dusky sky. A new cycle, the next round…
